NASI falls 1.14% on thin trade as banks and insurers lead declines
The NASI closed at 244.72, down 1.14%, with the N20I off 0.59% and the Banking Index down 0.72%. Breadth was weak, 15 gainers against 33 losers of 55 traded, and turnover fell to KES 329.5m, 76% below the 16-session average. KCB (KCB) and Safaricom (SCOM) led value traded, followed by Equity (EQTY) and NSE (NSE). Foreign investors were net sellers at KES -65.2m, 15.9% of turnover, with KCB and NSE seeing the largest foreign outflows while Equity attracted modest buying. Construction and Allied was the only sector to post a gain of note, up 4.68%, while Insurance and Agricultural counters lagged.
Away from the floor, SASRA's annual report shows regulated Saccos grew deposits 11.12% to Sh832.74bn and assets to Sh1.21tn in 2025, with membership up to 7.87 million, though Metropolitan National Sacco breached all three statutory capital adequacy ratios. KUSCCO's liquidation saw a new appointee, Waithaka Ngaruiya, named despite a court stay, extending uncertainty in the sacco sub-sector that pension and fund managers track alongside bank asset quality. The Court of Appeal separately upheld the Affordable Housing Levy law, removing a legal overhang relevant to construction-linked counters.
