NASI falls 1.10% as banking and energy stocks lead broad decline
The NSE All-Share Index closed at 250.93, down 1.10%, with 32 counters declining against 18 advancers of 55 traded. Energy and Petroleum led the sell-off at -3.51%, followed by Insurance at -3.40% and Automobiles and Accessories at -3.37%, while Banking slipped 1.68% with 11 of 12 counters lower. Manufacturing and Allied, Agricultural and Construction and Allied sectors bucked the trend, each closing higher. Turnover reached KES 821.7 million across 19,017 trades, dominated by Equity Group (EQTY) at KES 209.6 million and KCB Group (KCB) at KES 180.3 million. Foreign investors were net buyers at KES 77.1 million, or 20.2% of turnover, led by purchases in EQTY and Safaricom (SCOM), while KCB and KenGen (KEGN) saw net foreign selling.
Equity Group (EQTY) featured twice in the day's news beyond trading activity: it was the top foreign buy and also emerged as a lender to the newly launched Sh25.9 billion ARCAFIM climate fund, to which it will contribute half the lending capital from its own balance sheet. Separately, the High Court's decision to halt KUSCCO's liquidation keeps unresolved a matter tied to sacco-sector financial stability, relevant to banks with cooperative-linked exposures. Kenya Power (KPLC) also featured, with the High Court upholding cancellation of its Sh1.8 billion security tender.
